Volunteers
Unless we think of others and do something for them,
we miss one of the greatest sources of happiness.
(R. Wilbur)
Volunteers are very important because they:
- help with our academic program
- help with our fine motor and gross motor program
- help with our music and art program
- work 1:1 with our students on specific learning goals
- join us for snacks and lunch time
- play, laugh and learn with our children
We have three kinds of volunteers.
- Local volunteers from Pattaya and area
- Genien was a student at an International School who obtained class credits while learning about students who have disabilities.
- International volunteers from around the globe
- Janet, a Canadian Special Education teacher, spent a day with us sharing her knowledge about teaching and resources. She had lots of great ideas; her many years of experience was invaluable to us.
- Marilyn, who is a retired headmistress from England, joined us for 5 days while holidaying in Thailand. She joined in and helped us begin our phonics program.
- Kendra, a Canadian student spent 6 months with us prior to entering University in Canada. She joined us as a full member of the teaching team. Everyone benefited from her extra support.
- Brooke and Kate are students in the Disability Studies Program at Mount Royal University (Alta. Canada). They joined right in and made a big difference in the learning environment for our students as well as spending a day a week with the disabled students from the Father Ray Foundation.
- Denise has many years experience working with disabled children in Canada; she brought a wealth of experience and enthusiasm with her. She helped students in our school, at the Father Ray Foundation and at Regents International School. Denise organized and ran a very successful activity day that included students from the three different programs.
- Carey, came to help our students for six weeks. She had no previous experience but was willing to learn from everyone. Here wealth of experience in the computer field was most helpful in developing new registration and admission forms as well as new learning materials.
- University Placements
- Mountain Smile is a placement site for students in the Disabilities Studies Program at Mount Royal University (Calgary, Canada). These University students receive course credits for the time they spend at Mountain Smile as students of Carol Johnson, their course instructor. They learn from hands-on experiences in a variety of different and interesting settings.
We offer a free room to our international volunteers and try to ensure that your stay is both educational and entertaining.
